Heel pain is the most common and disabling
foot problem in Australia today.
Since the heel is the largest bone in
the foot, it bears the most weight when you walk.
Weight gain, aerobics, standing at work
and many other every day activities such as constant walking and standing can all
put a large amount of stress on the heel bone.
This most common cause of deep pain
on the bottom of the heel is plantar fasciitis
(inflammation of the plantar fascia).
The Plantar Fascia is a broad band of
fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, from the heel to
the toes. It is just below the skin and fat.
It helps to secure the arch.
Symptoms:
- Sharp pain localised to the bottom
and/or the inside margin of the heel.
- Often worse on arising in the morning
and after rest.
- Aggravated by prolonged weight bearing
in walking or standing.
- May limit your activities
Treatment:
The practitioners at The walking Clinic
can assess your gait and lower limb structure and prescribe treatment regimes to
fit your individual needs.
The treatment often involves strapping
along with exercises and stretching, the use of night slints or the fitting of Orthotics
to correct underlying bio mechanical imbalances.
